Our people
Policing is a career like no other. We have a fantastic force of over 5,500 individuals at Northumbria Police who strive to deliver a compassionate, responsive and outstanding service 24/7. Our officers, staff and volunteers show commitment, determination, passion and pride on a daily basis as they make a real difference to our communities.
It is important that our workforce fully reflects the community it serves which is why we are working hard to recruit officers and staff from a much broader, diverse range of people, for a more representative force. Since 2019, the representation of female officers in our force has increased from 993 to 1,368 in 2022. We’ve also increased our representation of officers from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds from 54 in 2019 to 121 in 2023.

“I have never looked back. No day is ever the same and it’s nearly impossible to say what the highlight has been in my three years with the Force so far – there’s been so many.
I really wanted to become an officer to help people and I truly feel I’ve been able to do just that; I feel like I’m really making a positive difference to the lives of the people I interact with as an officer.
The job isn’t just fulfilling but it’s also flexible for me as a family man with young children. It’s a dream job.”

“I started my career here with Northumbria Police 18 years ago as a contact handler. Since then, I have become a team leader before venturing out into the wider organisation to become the wellbeing manager, contact & customer service manager and now Head of Communications.
What I love most about my job is that although I’m not a police officer, I know I make a difference everyday to the people I work with, and for, and for the communities that we serve.”

“Volunteering has always been a passion of mine, something where there’s a clear output where you can see you’ve made an impact. I’ve been a special constable since April 2021 and it’s probably given me the most satisfaction in any role I’ve done.
As a special, we all bring a rich diversity in terms of our other day to day roles. I feel like I’m making a difference – making a real change in somebody’s life. You need to want to make the world around you a better place – and this role is a tangible way of doing that.”
