Annual leave

Police staff are entitled to 26 days annual leave plus bank holidays per year; rising to 28 days after 3 years of service and 30 days after over 5 years of service.

Flexible working

We embrace flexible working across many of our police staff roles. We understand the demands of modern lifestyles and aim to accommodate your other commitments with options such as flexi-time, reduced hours and job sharing.

Generous pension contribution

We offer a generous pension scheme for our police staff with up to a16% employer contribution for staff on a Local Government Pension Scheme.

Development and training

We are committed to supporting our staff, and helping you develop in your role to take your career in any direction. You will have access to resources such as mentoring programmes, leadership training, in-house soft skill development and more to further your skills and experience in your role.

Support associations

We have a range of internal networks and communities you can get involved in – from Women in Policing, the ethnic minority association, menopause support group, baby buddies to the disability and carers association. They play a vital role in helping us create an inclusive culture, offering a safe space to meet like-minded colleagues, share experiences and inspire change.

Accommodating religious and cultural needs

We have several faith rooms across our stations that offer opportunities for quiet prayer and reflection. Our staff can choose to re-allocate Christian bank holidays to alternative religious dates and adjust breaks and shift timings to accommodate religious needs.

Police Federation

You can become a member of the Northumbria Police Federation (cost applies). Members receive support and advice from those who are elected workplace reps on a whole range of issues, including conduct, equality, performance, health, welfare and more. Members also benefit from discounts on financial, health, travel, legal, home, and vehicle products. There’s also group insurance and healthcare schemes to take advantage of.

We recognise the differences amongst our households and lifestyles, and we are always seeking to implement new policies and benefits to support our workforce. 

Maternity leave

Benefit from up to 6 months paid maternity leave and up to 15 months leave. You’ll also be entitled for paid time off for ante-natal appointments, and 10 paid keep in touch days so you can reconnect with your team before you return.

Adoption leave

Regardless of your length of service and hours worked each week, you will be entitled to up to 52 weeks adoption leave. You’re entitled to adoption leave whatever the age of your child, and you may be entitled to paid adoption leave based on your length of service.

Paternity leave

For fathers and designated co-parents of children whether that’s through birth or adoption, we offer up to two weeks paid paternity leave. You’ll also be entitled to unpaid time off to accompany an expectant mother to ante-natal appointments.

Tax-free childcare

Eligible parents can get up to £2,000 per child per year. For every £8 you pay, the Government will pay £2 towards your childcare costs. This is for approved childcare such as: childminders, nurseries, and wraparound care.

Parental leave

Staff members with over one year’s continuous service are entitled to up to 18 weeks unpaid leave for each child and adopted child, up to their 18th birthday.

Time off for dependants

Unforeseen and sudden emergencies can happen. You will be entitled to the provision of a reasonable amount of paid or unpaid time off during working hours to cope with the care of dependants in this event.

Compassionate and bereavement leave

You may be entitled to paid compassionate, bereavement and terminal illness leave provisions. These are intended to support staff members during difficult circumstances.

Health and wellbeing benefits

Employee assistance

Our EAP gives you and your immediate family 24/7 access to a team of trained wellbeing and counselling advisers. The support they offer is confidential, independent and unbiased, and covers both personal and professional issues.

Occupational health

Occupational health enables you to perform at your best by managing your health. Provided by Optima, these services can support if you’ve suffered an illness or injury or are returning to work following a period of sickness.

Sport and social

From boxing to basketball, there are plenty of teams and clubs for you to join and be a part of the thriving sports scene at Northumbria Police. As part of your membership, you’ll also get access to the NP gyms located at a number of our stations.

Cycle to work scheme

Promoting healthier journeys to work and reducing environmental pollution. You’ll have the opportunity to hire a bicycle from us to cycle to work – the cost of which can be deducted from your monthly gross pay.

Eye care provision

Need an eye test? As a member of staff, you may be eligible to receive vouchers entitling you to a free eye test and glasses at a reduced cost.

Free flu jab

Northumbria Police have invested in a flu voucher scheme which entitles all staff to benefit from a free flu jab – protecting you and your family during the cold weather.

Police treatment centre

By making a monthly donation, the PTC can support you during difficult times providing treatment and support, including intensive, police-specific, physiotherapy and rehabilitation, for injured and ill Police Officers, Police Staff and Retired Officers.
