What benefits will I receive as a member of police staff?
Annual leave
You’ll have a starting allowance of 22 days’ annual leave plus bank holidays, rising to 30 days after five years’ service.
Flexible working
We understand the demands of modern lifestyles and aim to accommodate your other commitments with options such as flexitime, reduced or compressed hours and job sharing.
Generous pension contribution
As part of our police staff benefits package, we put up to a 16% contribution into your pension to help you build a strong foundation for retirement.
Support groups
Our support groups provide colleagues with a forum to come together, raise awareness of challenges and receive confidential support. From our Ethnic Minority Association to our LGBTQ+ Association, Men’s Support Network, Women’s Support Network and more.
Compassionate and bereavement leave
You may be entitled to paid compassionate, bereavement and terminal illness leave to support you during difficult circumstances.
Maternity leave
Benefit from up to 6 months paid maternity leave and up to 15 months leave. You’ll be entitled to paid time off for antenatal appointments, and 10 paid keep-in-touch days.
Discounts and rewards
Joining the emergency services community gives you access to a Blue Light Card, public sector discounts and rewards for police. In Northumbria we also offer discounts on fitness and meal prep subscription apps, discounted gym memberships and more.
Employee assistance
Our employee assistance programme gives you and your immediate family 24/7 access to a team of trained wellbeing and counselling advisers.
Religious and cultural needs
We have several faith rooms across our stations that offer opportunities for quiet prayer and reflection. Officers can choose to re-allocate Christian bank holidays to alternative religious dates and adjust breaks and shifts to accommodate religious needs.
Family-friendly benefits
We offer a wide range of family‑friendly police staff benefits, including generous maternity, adoption and paternity leave, support with childcare costs, and parental leave and time off for dependants. These benefits are designed to support you and your family through life’s important moments and unexpected challenges.
Sport and social clubs
From boxing to basketball, there are 30+ teams and clubs for you to join and be a part of the thriving sports scene at Northumbria Police.
Travel discounts
Take advantage of our travel schemes for discounts on local rail and bus services and the Tyne and Wear Metro with the cost of tickets deducted from your monthly pay.
On-site gyms
There are modern gyms across many of our police stations, accessible by paying just £1 per week into our Sports & Social Association.
Police Federation membership
As a member, you’ll receive support from workplace representatives on conduct, equality, performance, health, and welfare. You’ll gain access to private healthcare, on-site physio, in-house counselling, as well as financial & mortgage advice and much more.
Car lease scheme
We offer car leasing through salary sacrifice via NHS Fleet Solutions. If you are joining us from an employer which offers this benefit, you can bring your car with you. T&Cs apply.
Health benefits
If you’ve suffered an illness or injury or are returning to work following a period of sickness, our occupational health service can support you. You’ll also get access to free eye tests and flu jabs as a member of police staff. And, with a monthly donation, you can also access the national police treatment centres in Scotland or Harrogate, which provide physiotherapy and rehabilitation.
