OUR ROLES
Policing is a vast and varied career choice, with endless opportunities to progress. After probation, you can move into a specialist role or climb the ranks into senior policing.
NEIGHBOURHOOD
OFFICER
Neighbourhood officers spend time getting to know local people, organisations and issues, and use a range of problem-solving skills to address community issues.
MOUNTED
OFFICER
As well as supporting community engagement and patrolling the streets, you’ll work with our police horses to keep people safe at public events such as big football matches and demonstrations.
MARINE
OFFICER
Marine officers help to police our waterways, making checks on the ports and marinas, assisting with underwater searches for evidence, and recovering bodies.
DOG
HANDLER
You’ll conduct searches with your dog, including locating missing persons, assisting in arresting offenders and supporting officers in their investigations.
MOTOR
PATROLS
Our traffic officers provide a visible presence on the roads to deter crime and reassure the community. You’ll attend and control the scene of road-related incidents, which may be serious, fatal and life altering.
RESPONSE
OFFICER
Following a 999 call, you’ll provide frontline response to a wide range of incidents, including complex and sometimes confrontational situations.
FIREARMS
OFFICER
Specially trained firearms officers respond to high-risk incidents, take part in proactive policing operations and provide public reassurance at events.
UNDERCOVER
OPERATIVE
As an undercover operative, you’ll be tasked with establishing relationships with those who have committed crimes in order to gain information and intelligence during an investigation.
DETECTIVE
As a detective constable, you’ll help to solve investigations into crime such as theft and burglaries, domestic abuse and hate crime incidents, knife crime and missing persons. As you gain more experience, you can specialise to work in safeguarding, major crime, cyber crime and beyond.
