Frequently asked questions

No, transferring to Northumbria Police will not affect your progression to the next pay point on the salary scale. You will continue to receive your annual increment on the same date as you would in your current force, based on your start date in your current rank.

Do I have to travel to Northumbria for my medical assessment?2025-08-28T14:43:35+01:00

Yes, as a transferee or rejoiner you will be required to attend Northumbria Police Occupational Health for your medical assessment and substance misuse test.

Am I eligible to transfer police forces?2025-08-26T10:37:20+01:00

To transfer as an officer, you must be serving or have been previously serving (in the last 5 years) and have completed your probationary period. You must be or have been serving with a Home Office Force, or Police Scotland/PSNI. Please refer to our additional eligibility criteria for more info.

Can I specify where I would like to transfer to?2025-08-28T14:39:54+01:00

We will do our best to accommodate your wishes for location preference as part of the recruitment process but this will depend on the vacancies available at the time of posting, your skill set and the Force’s current priority areas. As a result you can be posted anywhere within the force area. You can, however, specify a preference and make us aware of any extenuating circumstances which will be taken into consideration. Placements will be discussed with you at the point of final offer.

Can I apply if I am part time?2025-08-28T14:42:41+01:00

This does not prevent you from applying. However, should you be successful you will be required to make an application for flexible working which will be based upon the shift pattern where you will be based. Any application will need to be balanced with your needs and those of the force.

Can I apply if I am currently on a career break?2025-08-28T14:45:44+01:00

Yes, being on a career break does not prevent you from applying. However, you must have returned to your force prior to any transfer taking place.

Can I apply if I am currently absent due to sickness?2025-08-28T14:48:54+01:00

If you are successful at interview, you will be required to pass the fitness test. It is therefore expected that you will be fit and currently fulfilling your current role at the time of applying.

When do I need to tell my current force that I am applying for a transfer?2025-08-28T14:51:23+01:00

You can choose when to let your force know about your intention to transfer. However, once you pass the interview stage, we’ll contact your HR and Professional Standards Department and ask you to complete a consent form. This gives us permission to reach out to your current Occupational Health Unit to transfer your records.

When we make the final offer, we’ll also contact your current force to request your training records and references.

What formal notice do I need to provide to my current force?2025-08-28T14:52:45+01:00

Should you be successful at interview you should not provide any resignation to your current force until your pre-employment checks have been completed and you have received written notification of a transfer date. We will always endeavour to give you at least 28 days’ notice of your transfer date.

What training can I expect to receive?2025-08-28T14:56:03+01:00

You’ll join a 4 day induction session alongside other transferees. We will also arrange any relevant training courses for you to help you settle into your new position. Beyond your initial training, we aim to support the continuous professional development of our officers.

Will I receive removal or relocation expenses?2025-08-28T14:58:06+01:00

Unfortunately, the Force is not able to provide a removal or relocation cost for transferees.
