Transferee Officer Benefits & Salary

When you join Northumbria Police as a transferring or re-joining officer, we’ll make a wide range of benefits available to you including flexible working, discounted gym memberships and a range of support initiatives.

Officers are paid in accordance with the current national levels of pay relative to your rank (excluding any local benefits i.e. London weighting).

National salary pay scale will apply however officers transferring from Forces that do not follow this scale will have their current salary realigned to Northumbria Police pay scales, ensuring that any detriment or gain to salary as a result of the transfer is minimal.

If you are re-joining at the same rank your salary point will be the same as when you left the service.

Continuous Service & Entitlement

Any reconcilable service with an eligible Police Force is transferred to us and as such you will continue receive pay and annual leave increments. This is the case, whether you have a break in service or not.

Annual leave

You will receive an annual leave allowance that starts at 22 days, rising to 30 days depending on your length of service.  In addition to your annual leave entitlement, you will be entitled to between 8 and 11 public holidays each year. When Christmas, Boxing Day or New Year fall on a weekend, officers are entitled to both the original public holiday and substitute bank holiday. With the exception of Christmas Day, you may request to substitute the standard public holidays for a day of your choosing.

Police Federation

As an officer, you can become a member of the Northumbria Police Federation. Members receive support and advice from fellow officers who are elected workplace reps on a whole range of issues, including conduct, equality, performance, health, welfare and more. Members also benefit from discounts on financial, health, travel, legal, home, and vehicle products. There’s also group insurance and healthcare schemes to take advantage of.

Generous pension contribution

Your pension will transfer providing you do not have a break in service and are transferring from a Home Office force.

Flexible working

We understand the demands of modern lifestyles and aim to accommodate your other commitments. Officers at Northumbria Police can submit flexible working requests, which if approved may commence following the three-year probation. However, we are an emergency service with a 24/7 responsibility to the people of Northumbria and we will always consider requests in this context.

Support associations

You can join a variety of internal support associations and networks from Women in Policing, the ethnic minority association, menopause support group, baby buddies to the disability and carers association. These associations play a vital role in helping us create an inclusive culture, offering a safe space to meet like-minded colleagues, share experiences and inspire change.

Accommodating religious and cultural needs

We have several faith rooms across our stations that offer opportunities for quiet prayer and reflection. Our staff can choose to re-allocate Christian bank holidays to alternative religious dates and adjust breaks and shift timings to accommodate religious needs.

Protected learning days

We’ve introduced dedicated learning days to ensure RPT officers have adequate time to conduct organisational and mandated activities, as well as your own Continuous Professional Development (CPD); this is an investment in you to ensure that we continue to keep people safe and fight crime.

Maternity leave

Benefit from up to 6 months paid maternity leave and up to 15 months leave. And, we also entitle you to paid time off for ante-natal appointments, and 10 paid keep in touch days so that you can reconnect with your team before you return.

Adoption leave

Regardless of your length of service and hours worked each week, you will be entitled to up to 52 weeks adoption leave. You’re entitled to adoption leave whatever the age of your child, and you may be entitled to paid adoption leave based on your length of service.

Paternity leave

For fathers and designated co-parents of children whether that’s through birth or adoption, we offer up to two weeks paid paternity leave. You’ll also be entitled to unpaid time off to accompany an expectant mother to ante-natal appointments.

Tax-free childcare

Eligible parents can get up to £2,000 per child per year. For every £8 you pay, the Government will pay £2 towards your childcare costs. This is for approved childcare such as: childminders, nurseries, and wraparound care.

Parental leave

Parental leave offers eligible officers greater flexibility in sharing the care of their child during the first year following birth or adoption.

Time off for dependants

Eligible officers are entitled to the provision of a reasonable amount of paid or unpaid time off during working hours to cope with the care of dependants in the event of unforeseen or sudden emergencies.

Compassionate and bereavement leave

You may be entitled to paid compassionate, bereavement and terminal illness leave provisions. This is intended to support colleagues during difficult circumstances.

Health and wellbeing benefits

Employee assistance

Our EAP gives you and your immediate family 24/7 access to a team of trained wellbeing and counselling advisers. The support they offer is confidential, independent and unbiased, and covers both personal and professional issues.

Occupational health

Occupational health enables you to perform at your best by managing your health. Provided by Optima, these services can support if you’ve suffered an illness or injury or are returning to work following a period of sickness.

Police treatment centre

By making a monthly donation, the PTC can support you during difficult times providing treatment and support. This includes intensive, police-specific, physiotherapy and rehabilitation, for injured and ill Police Officers and Retired Officers.

Sport and social

From boxing to basketball, there are plenty of teams and clubs for you to join and be a part of the thriving sports scene at Northumbria Police. As part of your membership, you’ll also get access to the NP gyms located at a number of our stations.

Cycle to work scheme

Promoting healthier journeys to work and reducing environmental pollution. You can hire a bicycle from us to cycle to work – the cost of which can be deducted from your monthly gross pay.
