We invest in a whole host of wellbeing measures to make sure you’re safe, healthy and supported while you’re volunteering for us.
Do Special Constables get paid?
No, Special Constables are not paid as the role is entirely voluntary.
Do I need a driving licence to be a Special Constable?
No, it is not essential to hold a full UK car driving licence to be a special constable at Northumbria Police.
When will I start as a Special Constable?
We'll let you know when our next cohort of Special Constables will join TeamNP so you know when you might expect to join us when you apply.
Is there a fitness test for Special Constables?
Yes. The fitness test allows an assessment to be made of your endurance to ensure you are able to meet the demands of operational policing.
Can I choose where I’ll be based?
You can request to be based at s specific location, and we'll do our best to match your preference.
How much time do I need to commit as a Special Constable?
You'll need to commit a minimum of 200 hours each year - that's around 4 hours per week. This includes both duty time and training.
What training will I receive?
Special Constable training follows a blended approach of classroom based training, pre-recorded sessions and live online sessions you can join from home.
