A rewarding career
When you join Northumbria Police as a transferring or rejoining officer, we’ll make a wide range of benefits available to you including flexible working, discounted gym memberships and a range of support initiatives.
Salary
You will be paid in accordance with the current national levels of pay relative to your rank (excluding any local benefits i.e. London weighting).
National salary pay scale will apply however officers transferring from Forces that do not follow this scale will have their current salary realigned to Northumbria Police pay scales, ensuring that any detriment or gain to salary as a result of the transfer is minimal.
If you are re-joining at the same rank your salary point will be the same as when you left the service.
Pension
Your pension will transfer providing you do not have a break in service and are transferring from a Home Office force.
Officers from non Home Office Forces are advised to contact our Payroll & Pensions Department on 0191 493 6320 to discuss any pension implications.
Continuous service and entitlements
Any reconcilable service with an eligible Police Force will be transferred to us and as such you will continue receive pay and annual leave increments. This is the case, whether you have a break in service or not.
Travel
Whether you are on or off duty, you’ll enjoy free travel on the Tyne and Wear Metro seven days a week. Additionally, you can travel for free on Northern Rail Services when travelling to and from your place of work, or in connection with police duties. This however comes with the expectation that action is taken if an incident occurs whilst travelling free on the Tyne and Wear Metro system or Northern Rail services.
Flexible Working
We’ll always try to take your individual, religious and cultural needs into account so you can fit your work around your personal commitments, however we are an emergency service with a 24/7 responsibility to the people of Northumbria, so this may not always be possible.
Police Federation
You will be provided with the option to become a member of the Police Federation. Northumbria Police Federation is a branch of the Police Federation of England and Wales (PFEW), which is the staff association for all police constables, sergeants and inspectors (including chief inspectors).
Personal Support and Advice
We provide a whole range of initiatives to support the welfare of you and your family. These include:
- Occupational health support
- Health and wellbeing framework
- Development and mentoring schemes
- Membership of support associations to support and represent your needs
- Time and facilities during the working day to practice faith where possible e.g. to pray
